Ingredients
Bread (day old bread-store bread is good. Little Miss Sunbeam bread is not)
Eggs (depends on how much bread)
Butter
Vanilla
Cinnamon
Nutmeg
Salt
Orange zest (optional)
Slice up good bread. Three eggs for two 3/4 inch thick slices
of bread is about right. Beat eggs with splash of milk. Add cinnamon, nutmeg, a pinch of salt and a splash of vanilla. Soak bread in egg mixture until as soggy as possible. Melt butter in a skillet, then slip bread into pan and sauté gently until brown. Serve with warm maple syrup or dusted with powdered sugar or both.
Variation – use a splash of orange juice instead of milk and add a teaspoon of grated orange zest.
